Conflict of Interest?

I recently came across an article on The Financial Diet that took me by surprise. As I mentioned in my first post, I was toying around with the idea of starting a finance/fashion blog for a few years but wasn’t sure if there was a space for this kind of blog. Reading this article stopped me in my tracks. Was it a sign that I shouldn’t move forward with my blog?

The article read “9 Unanticipated Ways Being a Fashion Blogger Ruined my Finances”. This article was written by a current fashion blogger who found herself in trouble financially at the expense of keeping up with her blog. Is mixing finance with fashion like mixing oil and water, is this a potential conflict of interest?

Let’s Count the Ways

Below are the nine ways starting a fashion blog lead to financial ruin:

  • Keeping up with new trends
  • Creating an archive of outfits
  • Getting brands to notice me
  • Attending events
  • Paying for online classes
  • The blogger discounts
  • Paying for advertisement, loop giveaways, or straight up Instagram followers
  • Fresh content = fresh new purchases
  • Paying for expensive photography

I will admit the list above addresses a handful of the reasons I waited so long to start up a blog. I thought, and still think, it will be expensive. I plan to keep costs down by playing by my own rules and not falling victim to the the items above.

I don’t plan to chase trends; I have my personal style and I plan on sticking with my tried a true neutrals with a touch of pink. I am not after recognition but rather want to share with those willing to listen the things I’ve learned on my financial and fashion journey. I plan to find ways to use what I already own to create new and “fresh” content and encourage my followers to do the same. My ultimate goal is to create a space on this blog where fashion and finance can exist in harmony.

The Road Map

I feel like this is the perfect time to outline my mission statement and list out my objectives. My mission with this blog is to carve out a tiny space on the internet where finances and fashion can co-exist not compete with one another. I think I’ve done a pretty good job of navigating the fashion waters and simultaneously not allowing my personal finances to sink. My vision on the Financial Fashion Planner is to share with you some of the tips and tricks I’ve learned along the way.

  • How to build a professional wardrobe
  • Identifying your personal style
  • Responsible shopping
  • Budgeting
  • Store Sale Updates
  • Home and closet organization
  • Re-imagining/re-working your wardrobe
  • Outfit planning
  • Financial planning

Let me know what you are most looking forward to reading about or if you have other topics you would like me to cover.

  1. I think knowing how to re-imagine/re-work your wardrobe is a really valuable skill! Being able to re-work old pieces into new styles is a huge money saver, so that is a skill I definitely want to learn!

    1. Amanda, thanks so much for leaving a comment. This will be a huge area of focus here on The Financial Fashion Planner. Be sure to check back in, I am about to launch a new series, The Monday Style Challenge. I will give all my followers a challenge to incorporate into their work outfits that Monday or that coming week. The hope is to spark creativity and make getting dressed in the morning more enjoyable.
